from an article about wives earning more than their husbands:

“We’re Christians, so for me to not be the breadwinner … it’s not the easiest thing,” he said.

wtf? really?

10:58 pm - (the grayzey haze)
the grayzey haze
of the distant distance,
looks weary upon shoulders whose
function has been tested-;

and upon the shoulders doth tired
and the tired is yet to sleep,

the horizon seems much further now
when every step forward keeps you in place.
they carry naught a pound more
they take not less a step
that keeps them
remaining.

all the while the eyes remain fixed upon
the changing of day to night.

06:03 pm - looking back
i've been compiling the poems i've written over the years so they are all in one place. many of them are here on livejournal. which has given me a chance to look back (since i didn't sort the poems or anything). i have to go through each entry, one by one, to see if i've written anything.

my journal goes back to december 2003. that is some time ago. and as i go though each entry (from the early days) i think:

what a pretenious asshole.

i believe i was very difficult to know back then. or in the very least everyone else was young and difficult to know as well, so it all worked out.

i'm sure that had stephie and i met at this point in my life i would have thoroughly ruined things. hah.

i wonder what i will think of myself six and a half years from now? will i as be as disgusted as i am now?

i'm not sure, but every so often i go back and evaluate myself and think of how far i've come. i spent a great deal of time doing this on my 25th birthday (i'm now 28). and every time i revist the person i was i come to a similar conclusion. i have to come to terms with the fact that i may not be progressing at all, or in the very least not as much as my inner most desires wish.

but hey, it's all part of living.

the thing about not seeing the pitch ahead of time is that you are able to swing wildly and see what happens.

07:47 pm - Woodstock (again)
this past weekend Stephie and i visited her family in woodstock. i had a better than ok time.

i was thinking after dinner this evening how readily and easily i have been accepted into her family. i had never been made to feel as a stranger in their home; i always feel welcome. i told Scott (Stephanie's brother) how much i appreciated his hospitality.

the first time i was invited to woodstock to meet the family we had dinner at his and his wife's house. when i arrived i learned it was Scott's birthday (something not revealed to me eariler, had i known i would have brought a gift). the entire evening he ensured everyone was having a good time rather than allowing others take care of him. i thought that remarkable.

Kathy (Stephanie's sister-in-law) has also been very receptive and welcoming. i really enjoy visiting them.

this past weekend i brought a model rocket kit for Eric (the seven year old) and purchased the correct engines. three came in a package and by the second the rocket landed on the roof of the school. we had one engine left, so we went into Scott's shop and made a rocket out of plastic conduit, cardboard, sheet metal, and duct tape. it was far too heavy and flew a mere 4 meters before falling to the ground while the remains of the fuel burned. it was a fun time.

this evening we recieved a call from Stephie's mother. she offered to pay for the chapel, Stephie's dress, and the food at the reception. we were blown away! what a wonderful gesture and gift! this certainly helps ease our minds regarding our wedding on May 15th.

it's funny how much can change in a year's time. a year ago... things were very different. and here we are today.

life really is a remarkable, wonderful, and heart-wrenching journey. what a gorgeous journey it is!

01:55 am - may or may not make sense...
when the darkness falls upon silent scars
who ribbon across skin whose once upon a goal
was to but cover

in this
in these circumstances
do the loves and lost and loves lost
meet upon the scarlet fading
the skin's sensuous
the dark
the lip's exchange

the partly
the wholeness
the once-upon-a-time ness
of living realities
lost upon three year old girls;-

to know that it is true
and sound
and sleeping gently beside you
is
the world.

black may be dark, but,
i will have
you.

11:46 pm - (the effort, must, therefore, lay within)
the effort, must, therefore, lay within
the bounds of
limitless hearts;-

make the happiness
lest
the seeking puts you
onto a labyrinth of
misconstrued columns and wasted
afternoons.

make your own
happiness.

let not whispers be but anything
but shouts.

manical declorations of blues
nay, azures
shine through rain and then

rainbows.

03:50 pm - this side of 28
today is an unsual day, notwithstanding it being my birthday.

ryan got me the coolest birthday present i've received in a while - star trek scene it. we played yesterday and did quite well! hah! stephie has a high bar to clear when she gets home :-p

due to a confluence of events i had today off from work. everyone on the admin side of things needed one day off over the next three weeks, and today just happened to be my day. that was nice.

i slept in until 8:50 and felt overslept. a coffee and breakfast fixed that.

then... i did little else. i've been watching what's happening at the apple wwdc online, watched a movie or two and had an intense workout here at home using a pull up bar/apparatus and push up helper. i didn't want to go to the gym today, but didn't want to miss out on my chest and back workout.

speaking of health and fitness, i've been trying out a vegan creatine just to see what it would be like. i 've seen changes in my appearance (more precisely stephie has seen changes), which i suppose is a nice added bonus. i was only looking for gains in strength and endurance, but i'll take the physical side effects too! :-)

now i'm going to write my column for pulse before we go out for dinner. last week my column on North Korea got some attention on google which jordy pointed out to me. that was pretty neat!

more or less just a lazy day, which i've needed for a while.
